Frequently Asked Questions

Maruti Industries manufactures a complete range of industrial abrasive products from its facility in GIDC Naroda, Ahmedabad. Our product range includes Flint Paper (natural mineral abrasive for wood), Emery Paper (aluminium oxide abrasive for metal and wood finishing), Emery Roll (flexible cloth-backed abrasive for polishing and pipe finishing), Sandpaper Sheets and Rolls (versatile abrasive for wood, metal, and automotive applications), and Aloxide Cloth Roll (premium aluminium oxide on cloth backing for heavy-duty metal grinding and polishing). All products are available in multiple grit sizes and can be supplied in bulk for industrial, OEM, and wholesale buyers across India.

Emery paper uses natural emery mineral (a combination of corundum and magnetite) as the abrasive, making it ideal for polishing and finishing metal surfaces. Sandpaper typically uses synthetic abrasives like aluminium oxide or silicon carbide on paper or cloth backing, making it more versatile for both wood and metal. Emery paper is generally more flexible and better suited for hand polishing, deburring, and fine metal finishing, while sandpaper (especially aloxide-coated) provides a more consistent cut and longer life on harder materials. For wood finishing, sandpaper is usually preferred; for metal polishing and pipe finishing, emery paper or emery cloth rolls are the industry standard.

Grit selection depends on your material and the finish required:
  • Coarse grits (36–60): Aggressive material removal, stripping old paint, levelling rough wood, grinding welds.
  • Medium grits (80–120): General-purpose sanding, surface preparation before painting, removing scratches left by coarse grits.
  • Fine grits (150–220): Finishing passes on wood before staining or painting, light metal finishing.
  • Very fine grits (240–400): Final smoothing between paint coats, polishing metal, near-mirror finish.
  • Ultra-fine grits (600+): Wet sanding lacquers, polishing stainless steel pipes, automotive paint correction.
Always start with the coarsest grit needed and progressively move to finer grits for the best result.

An aloxide cloth roll (also called aluminium oxide cloth roll or emery cloth roll) is a flexible abrasive product made by bonding aluminium oxide (aloxide) grains onto a durable cloth backing using a resin bond. It is used for grinding, deburring, rust removal, weld blending, and polishing metal surfaces including steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and cast iron. The cloth backing makes it stronger and more flexible than paper-backed abrasives, allowing it to wrap around curved surfaces, pipes, and irregular shapes. It is widely used in metal fabrication, automotive, engineering workshops, pipe manufacturing, and surface finishing industries across India.

Flint paper is a natural abrasive product made by bonding crushed flint mineral grains onto a paper backing. It is primarily used for wood sanding applications including furniture manufacturing, carpentry, cabinet making, and surface preparation before painting or varnishing. Flint paper is softer than synthetic abrasives and works best on wood, softboard, and similar materials. It is available in coarse to fine grits and is a cost-effective choice for light to medium wood-sanding tasks. Maruti Industries supplies flint paper in both sheet and roll formats for workshop and industrial use.

Emery roll and emery paper use the same natural emery mineral abrasive but differ in their format and backing. Emery paper comes in flat sheets with a paper backing, suitable for hand sanding and flat surface finishing. Emery roll comes on a continuous cloth-backed roll, making it more flexible, durable, and suitable for wrapping around pipes, tubes, cylindrical objects, and machine polishing applications. Emery rolls are the preferred format for lathe polishing, pipe finishing, and production-line surface preparation where continuous abrasive is needed without frequent sheet changes.

For polishing stainless steel, aloxide cloth roll (aluminium oxide abrasive on cloth backing) is the recommended choice. Start with a medium grit (120–180) to remove scratches, tool marks, or weld discolouration. Progress to fine grit (240–320) for a consistent brushed finish, and finish with ultra-fine grit (400–600) for a near-mirror or satin polish. Emery rolls are also suitable for lathe polishing of stainless steel pipes and bars. Always work in one direction along the grain to achieve a professional finish.

For woodworking, grit selection depends on the stage of work:
  • 80 grit: Rough shaping, removing machine marks, initial levelling.
  • 100–120 grit: General sanding and levelling.
  • 150–180 grit: Fine finishing before staining or painting.
  • 220–240 grit: Final sanding before applying the last coat of varnish or lacquer.
  • 220–320 grit: Sanding between coats of paint or varnish.
Always sand with the grain and remove dust between grits. Maruti Industries flint paper and sandpaper sheets are well-suited for all stages of woodworking.

Standard emery paper with paper backing is not designed for wet use. For wet sanding applications in automotive paint correction, lacquer finishing, and metal polishing with coolant, specify waterproof (wet/dry) sandpaper when placing your order. Aloxide cloth rolls with cloth backing are inherently more moisture-resistant than paper-backed abrasives and can handle light moisture in industrial applications.
